We are lucky enough to have several good QSs in our area, probably over a dozen within 45 minutes to an hours drive. The problem is that I just can't afford to support them all. The one that I support with my purchases is the one that also has the wonderful RETREAT CENTER attached---Threads of Time in Danville, Illinois. Wonderful rooms to sew in, bedrooms, kitchens, a beautiful fenced in garden with a large electrified gazebo, grill, patio furniture and a quilt store attached to all of that. They also offer classes and bring in national quilters for shows and workshops. You just can't get better than that. Everyone should plan a retreat. It's pretty inexpensive.

I suppose it depends on why they are closing. I've had 3 close, but 1 was because of the owner's health, one because of the owner's parent's health and one because of personal reasons. None have closed because of the economy (yet).

I spoke with the owner and what I took from the conversation was that there is no way the stores are closing.

Ours closed some time ago.... and the nearest fabric supplier to me is about 30 mins drive. I got to know the owner quite well at our LQS a real sweetie. Fabric is expensive here and she just wasn't making enough to cover rent etc. and some days she would only get one or two customers. It was sad for her, but she really needed to close before it got too stressful and affected her family life. She said the nicest thing was most of the people understood what was necessary and wished her well....but unbelievably, some people got quite sniffy about it. Small business is hard work, and when times get tough they are the first to feel it.

I wasn't a "frequent-er" of Quilt Stores until recently...I was "hooked" (and not necessarily in a good way) on those Joann's coupons. But after close inspection of Joann's fabrics and feeling misled so many times by their coupons (where the prices are jacked up to cover the coupon discount), I now try to go to both the LQS's within an easy driving range. Your post has reminded me of the importance of supporting them, and since it has been a month since my last visit, I will go today.

I am sorry that you lost yours....maybe someday, when the economy picks up, we will see this trend reversed....let's hope so.

I hate when that happens. Of course if it's for retirement and not economic reasons, I wish them the best.

Sorry you're losing your LQS. Becky's on the town Square closed last spring. Told her that she would be so missed!
The good news is that a very nice lady opened a new LQS in the same building!
