I would enter formulas and square/rectangle requirements into a spreadsheet, add more formulas and divide by 36. Gets closer numbers than EQ and it provides the cutting plan. I love spreadsheets and use them for many things.
Here is a small example:

fabric needed length how many widths

White 2.5 8 5 42/8 100/5 =?? 27 inches or 1/3 yd and so on for each color and shape, then make your spreadsheet add them up and convert to yardage.

I didn't do any real math here, but you just need to remember "cuts across" and ??widths are up and will give the ydg

Thank you moreland..you have inspired me! I want to make a quilt with that "look"...right now! This will not be added to my ever-growing bucket list...I want to do it now! So I got some fabric and hit a stumbling block!! I don't know which ones to use so I came here for more guidance from you and other incredibly talanted and creative quilters on the QB. I am posting the picture with options. Consider the fabric labeled left to right, 1 thru 5. #5 is my choice for the tiny little center square. The other 2 in the 2nd picture are options as well!

Thanks for sharing. Since I first saw the picture, I've been trying to figure out how it was done. So simple!! Now if I can bookmark this, I'll have achieved something today. It is a beautiful quilt.

Missgigglewings, I like your first four fabrics ... just not sure what I would recommend for the center - maybe something a little darker than fabric #5, but that's me. I look forward to see your quilt.

I did a quick mock up, but don't look too close....Can you tell me if it will pop the way yours did? Or least do you think the black/blue floral print is too much?

I sent a PM to missgigglewings but for others reading this, I suggested that missgigglewings drop the medium blue fabric. Place the lighter floral next to the darker floral, and insert the light overall floral from the second group of fabrics in the block as the second row, thus getting a better light to dark value range. Right now the solid blue stands out too much, so instead of the eye going smoothly from center to outer edge, it stops at the medium blue before moving on to the rest of the block.
