I have mixed feelings about Christmas...it has always been my favorite holiday, and I do still want to celebrate the Reason for the Season, and I love getting together with my family, but the commercialism of the holiday has gotten out of hand. We have cut back to $5.00 gifts for our family...try to buy on sale to get something unique for the $. Other side of family we do a $20.00 gift card exchange...that has been kinda fun...do the "stealing" game with that one. But, the holidays have been not the same since I lost my husband in September of 2004, and last year my brother passed away, and this year one of my brother in law's passed away, and combine that with my father who has severe Alzheimer's and it just makes the holidays something to get through. Thankfully I have a great group of quilting friends and we have a very special Christmas celebration usually a couple weeks before Christmas...that has become my favorite part of the season.

I am so sorry to hear that others seem to have lost the reason for the season! I find this a joyous time of year and would celebrate (and do) all year long. I wish you all a blessed, peaceful New Year.

Reading your post I have a beautiful ornament that you might like to make (if you haven't already). It consist of a clear glass ball with white feathers in it. All you need is one of those feather bolero's. (It makes hundreds) Then add this poem. When my sister and I made these for our family, we personalized them by adding each individual's name - Dear_____. We then trimmed them and added a gold or silver trim around the edges of the card and tied it to the top of the ornament with matching gold or silver ribbon. If you have a problem trying to figure out what I've said let me know and I will try to take a picture of one and post it for you.

Dear ,
I’m an Angel feather
Sent from God with love.
To serve as a reminder
He watches from above.
I’m from your Guardian Angel
The Lord assigned to you
She dropped it in her struggles
As she protected you.
Each time you almost stumble
Each time you nearly fall,
Thank God and all his Angels
For answering your call.

These ornaments sound lovely. I wish you would post a picture, please.

I have a brother like that. No one likes to be around him but his brow beat wife. My mother never had him in her will to begin with. LOL

Maybe next year I will find a "groove" when we are moved into the new house and not as cramped; but for the last few years it has been hard to get into the spirit; and maybe DH will have got out of his funk.
What is it about Christmas and DHs' "funk." What are they thinking?! What part of "the joy of the season" don't they understand?! We've been married for 49+ years and were a couple for six years before that. And every Christmas season was the same. The years have not changed him. It sure can ruin the Christmas spirit in the rest of us.Christmas eve is always the day I have the heaviest heart. One would think that after a certain age they'd get over it already. This year especially, everywhere I went I'd hear ladies speaking of the same thing -- DH's lack of the spirit of Christmas.

Am I the only one????? I love Christmas. First I love the Reason for the Season (the birth of Christ), secondly, it is so neat the way people say "excuse me", "Merry Christmas" (I hate happy holidays), "Happy New Year", I love to see the children, I love the way I feel, I love knowing that my mother made it through her 95th Christmas and had time to have a glass of Barefoot wine with me yesterday!!!!! I love the lights, the ornaments, everything! Just think how horrible this world would be without Christmas. I love looking forward to Spring after the 12 Days of Christmas. I love looking forward to next Christmas - what I will make for my family - the planning of whatever I will make for my family - the getting it done during the summer. I was not prepared, I forgot to make this, opted not to make that, didn't plan my time very well, but we made it, had family over, had neighbors over, and it all worked out just fine. And I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE SAME THING ALL OVER AGAIN NEXT YEAR! Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year to you all and God bless us everyone! And God Bless America. Edie

I think a lot of us get used to our little comfortable nest and although it is great to have our families come visit or go visit them, it feels so good to get things back to normal. Hubby and I had our son and daughter in law come visit for a week. We only get together about once every 3 years and it was so so nice to have them for Christmas. They drove 20 hrs. to come visit us. We had great food and a really fun time, BUT, which is a big one.... they brought their 2 Austrailian Shepherds with them.. They are beautiful, BUT, another one of those, we have 3 dogs also, a border collie, also an Aussie and a little cock a poo. So you can imagine what it was like with 5 dogs in the house for a week. They left this morning and it will take me a month to vacuum all the dog hair. Instead of little kids squealing, it was dogs barking and playing. Since their 2 dogs had to always stay on a leash in Florida, they had a ball in these Missouri Ozarks. We're taking the tree down today....enough is enough. It is so nice and quiet and peaceful in the house.

I agree also....altho it was fairly relaxing for me....the biggest job I think is putting away all the food after dinner...I went in and sat down and told them to go for it...LOL My unmarried oldest son always brings his tuppereware and I told him he could just help put everything in the fridge...
