Black eyed peas and collard greens from our garden (other things too). We have them quite often. DH is putting collard greens in the freezer as we speak.

I listen to the Blackeyed Peas, does that count? lol

We had homemade pizza. My mom makes lentils and I don't like them either. Having to eat that food would set the tone for the bad start of the new year.

Ewww, YUCK! No black eyed peas here, sorry. I'll take split peas or pinto beans over that any day.

Well, got another rejection letter ... guess the black-eyed peas didn't work .... yet .... and the black-eyed peas didn't taste all that great. I've enjoyed all your traditions.

How do you cook black eyed peas? I thought they didn't need to be soaked and that they cooked quicker than beans but mine took forever and then ended up mushy. Couldn't find much on doing a "google" - times varied and so did methods.

Had my black eye peas, baked sweet potatoes (my choice--yum), ham and cabbage on New Years Day and today added liquid, crushed tomatoes, small diced potatoes and carrots and spices and made soup with the left over BEPeas. Learned that one from a black chef at the Coast Guard Base in Bermuda 47 years ago. Really good on a cold night.

Have a great 2012

I usually soak mine for a little while. Don't really need it. Also, at the beginning, I add a pinch of soda and bring to a boil and then rinse. It takes the really black that sometimes shows up. This did not happen this year for some reason, but did cook quickly. Could have to do with how old even the dry beans are. I just add water, salt, some spices, (little oregano, etc. and a ham hock or ham pieces and cook. See my recipe for soup later on. Good luck
