Go to your local lumber yard or builders supply and get some foam insulation board. It's about an 1' thick and should work for what you want. It comes in 4'x8' sheets. It's a little fragile so you might want to glue it to a piece of corrigated cardboard or panelling. I've used it to make different size design walls. It's not very expensive.

I have used styrofoam wreaths. Possibly the same idea. A Phillips head screwdriver worked well.

I have made one, bought it from a vendor at a show. Had the pattern already laser cut through double stick tape and the foam board. Removed the tape, stuck the fabric to the shape and poked in the corners. Took me about 2 hours to do the whole block and that was with fussy cutting some of the fabric pieces.

I read in the catalog that Clotilde has passed at the age of 83, she has a twin sister.

I bought one to see exactly what kind of foam it was. I wanted to do the technique for a quild class. The foam is not the Styrofoam I was use to. It's very smooth and dense. It is made like the Pink Panther insulation foam which is very expensive and hard to find in the right thickness for the project. Trying to find the right carbon paper and foam it was easier and less expensive to buy the supplies directly from the website. I tried the regular Styrofoam and the fabric didn't look or hold fabric as smooth as as the kit foam. Here is the website I ordered from:http://quilt-magic.com/cgi-bin/store/QLTstore.cgi
