Yup... Looks like mine too.. I thought it was supposed to be easier.. as I've watched videos, but after I started.. Ughhhh.. I'm in the middle of making five quilts.. Each is supposed to be the same, and is qayg.. I think this is going to be a longer project than what I expected..

Actually, your first attempt looks really good. If you have prewashed your fabric, then used cotton batting, and then washed and dried your first attempt, you would be impressed with your accomplishment! Your stitches look very even, and that is good. My first attempt had my stitches all different lengths! My teacher had us practice stitch on paper. Then we drew patterns on muslin with batting between. After a while you get addicted!

I've been practicing FMQ for about 11 years and my quilting STILL looks awful! Practice does not necessarily result in perfect! I'm torn because I can't afford quilting by others but also cannot offer my projects for sale and why I have more than 2 dozen quilt tops unfinished. I am so-o-oooo envious of all you folks who can FMQ so beautifully.

Thank you everyone for all the encouragement. The "flight of the bumblebee" pattern made me laugh out loud. I don't take myself too seriously and figured I could give every one else a chuckle while I continued to giggle about it. LOL

I ended up drawing some patterns on the fabric using templates my grandmother made over twenty years ago, then free-motion stitching them. I have 4 or 5 of them done. I need to trace more and get back at it. I'll be sure to post pics of the finished quilt.

Here's the thing... no matter how intimidating you find FMQing to be, just try it! What do you have to lose? A small quilt sandwich? No big deal!! The quilting police won't come knocking on your door and ban you from ever doing it again. They haven't been to my door (but I've been out of town ever since I posted that pic! LOL)

Give it a try and be willing to look at it as an adventure! For over 20 years, I was convinced I'd never be able to sew anything and here I am now quilting! Gotta try or you'll never know what you're capable of.

It's a great start. Try slowing your hands down a little and it'll get even better. I agree with the others, have look at Leah Days website, she's very inspiring and has some great tips to share.

It all starts with the first one. On one of my patriotic quilts I wrote the words faith-hope-and charity on the borders. Watched too much of Glenn Beck tee hee!!
