@Charlee, is that used coffee grounds or unused?? I think I'll try that first! It does have an oily type smell but there is no oil pan liner, just an empty case. Smells old???????

Unused, fresh out of the can. (If you use flavored ground coffee, you get a bonus! )

The oil pan liner is on the machine itself...take off the bottom panel of the machine and you'll find it.

The musty/moldy/mildew odor comes from the horse hide glue used to glue the liner in the case.

If charcoal works you can get it anyplace aquarium supplies are sold. Would used coffee grounds work or do they have to be fresh. What is an oil pan liner?

No felt pan and it has been outside for a week. I am worried about putting in direct sunshine in AZ.

Thumbs up Had the same musty odor problem

I brought the problem to the Quilting Board and I received a LOT of help. I used a bar of Irish Spring green soap (keep in the open box if you wish). Someone suggested using charcoal foot pads so I bought some and put in the bottom of the case along with some unused dryer sheets. Keep your case shut for several days. The odor is gone but I still keep the charcoal, soap, and dryer sheets in the case...just in case. I never have figured out how to take the bottom off my featherweight (Laura Leigh), so I guess that is something I should look into.

Previous to the above, I had sprayed with Febreeze, washed with pure vinegar, and sat the case in the sunlight, all to no avail. That is when I came to the Board. Thank you for all your help!!

I used cider vinegar, in a small container, put in a wadded paper towel, to serve as a "wick" and it really works great.
also we do alot of deep frying and I use the same to take those odors out of the kitchen. I

Fresh coffee grounds.
The oil pan liner is on the bottom of your machine. If you take off the bottom panel, it lines that panel. It's for catching excess oil that drips when you oil the machine. The smell of the old oil will transfer itself to the lining of the case and linger.
