Hello and Welcome :D :D :D
Have you looked at the Tutorial section of the board? Shelly Q has 4 that are geared for beginners! She even shows what the blocks look like in a quilt on some. AND there are lots of pictures to help explain each step!
A whole cloth quilt would be good maybe after you practice hand quilting, in my opinion. I think your stitches would not show up as much on a pieced quilt, if they are not perfectly even. Other's here may be better able to help you with this question, though.

Don't worry about not being able to take a class. There are some great tutorials and videos on the web to show you what's what. Check youtube for some great ones. Check out this website for a reference on common quilting terms:
http://www.equilters.com/library/tip.../glossary.html

I've taught myself everything and it's amazing how much helpful, FREE, advice is on the internet.

Hello and greetings from the Sacramento CA area. When I first started, I decided on a sampler quilt where I could learn different techniques on a block. It taught me the basics and also some blocks I am not fond of. A beginning sampler usually starts with Roman stripe or log cabin, 4-patch, then adds some triangles, curves, and applique.

Have fun!

Welcome from Juneau, Alaska. Your not alone, you have us. Start simple and you will achive great things. There are some great ways to learn how to quilt, have you asked anyone in your hometown if they quilt? It just looks hard, but you will do just fine. Just have fun with it.
