I use the "fold up" method for my long pieces and quilt backs.lol I put on the shelf. Don't have a place to hang or put wider foam core boards.

My larger pieces are 'ruler' folded but on my homemade 12" wide ruler. And then I hang them from clip style pants hangers. I found a place online that has the hangers cheap - less than 35 cents each. I didn't think I would need the whole box of 50, but I had to order another box of 50. I then have cardstock tags that have a large hole punched in one end with the length of the piece (and any other info) that hangs from the hanger hook. I can see at a glance how much I have of each fabric. Out of all of the ways that I have tried, I like this one best.

I put mine back on bolts and have them standing in the top of my closet shelf in my sewing room.

I use hangers, too, in my sewing/guest room. Have to move some if I have guests.

Thanks for all the great ideas! I currently have several different methods going and don't know what I will finally settle on. I have open shelving so unless I get a closet rod in my studio, that option is out, but who knows, I might decide that would work best and install one.

I have mine on the boards they come on. Then they are on shelving that used to be in the Walmart stores. When they did some of the store remodels 2 years ago DH followed the auctions sites where the fixtures where up for sale. One of the locations was close to the house, so I/we bought several feet of the fabric shelves (16 feet), plus two of the metal pattern cabinets and other fixtures.

Here's a good discussion about comic boards.
For less than $27 I purchased 300 boards locally...I still have about 80 of them left. In my opinion it was a great $27 investment.
Some would say (and I was one at one time) that they'd rather spend the money on fabric. With today's pricing....that's only 3 yards of fabric...then you'll still have a messed up fabric area.
Now I have a Great Looking fabric area and Now I can go buy that 3 yards of fabric and know where it's at!
Take your time...it's a process...but well worth the effort!

I have no trouble using the comic cardboard boards for even 10 yards. They stand in my book cases and they are not thick. It works especially well when the shelf is full and the fabric sort of holds itself up. I am sold on the comic cardboard boards and ruler folding for the fat quarters up to 1/2 yard.

Thanks for the suggestions! The thought of handling everything again is daunting, though.

I ruler fold everything. Little by little each day and it will get done. The results are worth it.
