Hi Lara! Ginger is beautiful.

I have two 301 shortbeds. They are both mocha. I sew on one of them all the time. I cleaned the one up (obvisously, I have not named them) and oiled it thoroughly and oil does not fling all around. I also used Tri-Flow grease on the gears. It was my first experience of ever taking the fly wheel off completely and greasing gears. I'm hooked now. Be sure to post photos of the quilts you make on Ginger in the Quilts made on Vintage Machines thread. Everyone wants to see!

I have 2 black short beds, lovely machines! One of them was free on Craig's list. I've had all the colors at some point and sold them off and then decided I needed to have one again.

Wow - you both have TWO 301s! That's a dream of mine for sure!

Even better dream would be free like you got one of yours Purple!

I would 'like' just one more... a black one to sit next to my little black FW! Wouldn't that be cute?

Aha! Just found a slightly different manual than the one I have for the Singer 301. It's a free download on Jenny's Sew-Classic blog from Singer Co. On page 28 it says: CAUTION: the motor requires no lubrication.
So that could be why you have two kinds of 301 motors Candace! Some need to be lubed and some don't. You were right, I don't need to worry about it... Yay!

She is a beauty! As for oiling, only use ONE drop in each area marked to oil. If it is slinging oil, you are using too much. I would stick with the 8 hour use and oil recommendation, and would also brush the lint out of the feed dog and bobbin case with every bobbin change. Rarely are old machines over-oiled, but I have seen far too many that were too dry.
