I too have severe arthritis and my Ortho doctor said he would recommend a memory foam. Not the pillow top, but the whole mattress. We love it and I have slept better. I hate to say this, but a new mattress is no time to look for the cheapest one. Continue to check sales at local stores and on line. Good luck and sweet dreams. I have been surprised that I have, on most nights, slept through the night......something I have not done for years.

I have the pillowtop too, but if we turn the mattress one quarter turn when I change the sheets, the sag goes away.

[QUOTE=QuiltingVagabond;5423930]I hate shopping for a mattress - the manufacturers put different names on the same mattress for each store so you cannot easily compare.

I bought a "firm" pillowtop that cost $1000+ and there was a sag where we sleep within 6 months

I second the half depth box spring to keep the total height down.[/Q

Mattresses arent suppose to do that, so check your warranty. I think most companies will replace the mattress if it sags so many inches..worth a check..

Wow - so much to consider! I'd like to try the foam, but then worry about breathing fumes all night - so I looked into the natural latex foam - and the price is so steep that it's beyond what we can do. So I still can't figure it out. I love all your comments though - it keeps giving me things to research!

First, remember the 8 year rule for mattresses was made by mattress companies who want you to buy a new mattress. You know when your mattress has stopped working for you.

We purchased an off brand foam mattresses and really love it. It is similar to a Temperpedic, but so much cheaper. Ours is firm and it has held up for four years so far. You can't flip this mattress but you can rotate it. My brother recently purchased one and loves it. Give them a try.

Well We just tried out a mattress that will be delivered Monday am. It's the Serta Natural Response firm. The last mattress we got was a Spring Air and it's only 6 yrs old but totally hate it. IT started sagging right away. We have another much older Spring Air back Supporter that we loved and is now in the guest room. Our visitors rave about it. the only reason we bought the newer spring air was that we went from a queen to a king.
My son and DIL bought the Natural response and said they sleep all thru the night. But they are young so i hope this one tuns out to be good. I'll keep you posted. BTW, it cost us $1900.

Serta is the one to go with. We got a new frame, added "bunky boards" (thin fabric covered frame-needed 2 for a king size bed) resting on the slats that supports the mattress like a platform bed and allows for tucking in the blankets. No box spring needed.
The bed is not too high off the floor. You don't have to flip or rotate the mattress and it has been comfortable for years now. The mattress is the kind where when one of you moves around the other doesn't feel it at all. Great.

Our same experience, bought an off brand memory foam..now on year EIGHT and looking to replace it...been sagging in the middle for 2 years now. I guess the "8 year rule" is true. I read that the Latex holds its' shape vs the memory foam which is a "marketing" ploy. I am considering a Stearns & Foster Adele from the Mattress Firm. Individually wrapped coils with a memory foam top. I loved my memory foam at first but now I am going back to a coil option.
    my 2 cents....very timely thread!

Now-a-days, Various latest collections of mattress are available through both online and off-line stores. Good quality memory foam mattresses distribute body weight evenly. A memory foam mattress is usually denser than other foam mattresses, making it both more supportive and heavier.
