Oh Bev, that is wonderful that your son is such a hard worker. Now a days, kids just don't want to work, they all just sit around with their cell phones reading their text messages. I think I was a strict mother too. When I married my second husband he had four kids, and I had two. They had chores every day, which rotated weekly. They all learned how to clean everything. I checked each day when I came home from work, and their chores had better be done!

I was known by my son's friends as the "strict mom". DH & I worked full-time and like Jeanie, I had chores for him to do when he got home from school. He knew to have the table set and the salad started. He complained then but he appreciates it now; DIL really appreciates it since he cooks, does laundry, etc. He learned because he had to. He's less strict with his kids, they do some chores but definitely spend too much time on computer or video games. My job is to keep my mouth shut LOL and let him do the parenting his way.

I too am one of the "strict moms"...making my kids do chores and not letting them go here or there all the time. It is especially "bad" that I don't let them talk on the phone, play the computer or watch tv whenever they want. My 14 yo dd thinks things around here are worse than her younger brother (12) and sister (10). Praying that one day they appreciate it like some of your children who are grown.

Yes Bev, when our daughter was about 25 she said one day "why didn't I ever listen to you"! Made my day!!! But they all have to learn for themselves, unfortunately. They just don't believe that we were "ever there and done that"!

Carriem...parents are meant to be loving guides not best friends. Not an easy role when you feel rejected and misunderstood by your own children and they know all of the buttons to push. If you an your husband are a united front, they may not like the boundaries but they will respect them and like the others have said, they will thank you someday. BTW...keep praying. My day came when my DS and DIL took their kids out of public school and home schooled them for several years. Before that they had been very vocal about my DS not graduating from HS even though he had been acceptd into college where they met.

And Dubib, I also agree that grandparents have it really the best. They just have to love all of the generations but let the youngest ones know that their DM and DD are the ones that call the shots. I think that does a lot for the middle generation so far as their confidence in their parenting.
