Default University of Illinois T-shirt quilt top

I have a friend who was a fellow grad student at UIUC, and she asked me to make her a T-shirt quilt using the T-shirts she collected over her years at the school. After much procrastinating, I finally finished the quilt top, just before going to see her. I'm going to surprise her with it. There are no borders on the top at the moment - she hadn't decided yet whether she wanted borders. Now that I've seen the whole thing "done," I really think that it needs borders....maybe the same navy and finished width as the sashing?

Hopefully we can pick out the backing fabric while I'm in town. I'd really like her to get a long-armer to quilt this - it's currently 96x96, and I just have a regular sewing machine - but I'm guessing that she's going to say she can't afford it. So any tips on quilting this would be appreciated!

I'm just so excited to see it so close to done! I literally sat on it for over a year, then prepared the blocks, then ignored it again for a few months. Once I got my butt in gear, I sewed this in a week. Should've done it a long time ago!

I would do a very loose meandering so it won't take away from the tshirts.

Oh so neat. Love how many shirts you used. I have plans to make one for a friend who was a scout master for 28 years. I only have about 36 shirts to choose from. Again, nice top.
