we have 2 horses as well. They are half arabian, half quarter horse. Half brother/sister. They are 1 1/2 and 2 yrs old. Still working with them to get them broke. We've had them for almost a year now. Hubby's aunt had to get rid of all her horses so we took these two. That machine looks to me like a Singer VS 2 from the late 1800's. I have that fiddle base machine. It is a shuttle machine right, although, there was a IF (Improved Family) fiddlebase from about 1879 to about 1895 that was the predecessor to the Model 15. Based on the tension assembly location and the fact that, that machine is a shuttle with a long bobbin, that has to be a VS 2 fiddlebase.
The Singer 115 was not that old - from about 1912 to 1935. It was a vertical rotary hook machine. The model 15 is a vertical oscillating hook.

I agree with Tammi that your machine looks very much like the 1889 VS-2 that I have with the lovely fiddle base. I know so little about the machines that my word means only exactly what I said...that it looks like mine. I am not aware of all of the machines that Singer made and have no knowledge of the 115. I am just learning. Enjoy your machine!

Are you sure that's a 115? It looks like a VS (variable shuttle) machine. It takes a long bobbin, right? And it doesn't have a tensioner on the faceplate, I thought all the 15 series had them on the left. I also thought the 115 was a later model, not the 15 mind you.... the long plates and the "Shovel" plate at the top make it look like a VS /27 style machine to me...
This one looks a lot like the 1889 VS2 I have here... only in better shape (yours, not mine) but I'd be interested in knowing if I've misidentified mine...

It is not really a 15 clone - yet similar.
Can you show some pics of the bobbin, the under side and the nose?

I think you can tell the difference by watching the hook motion as you turn the hand wheel. In general, though, if your machine looks like a 15 but has a different mechanism under there it might well be a 115 clone.

Those decals were the only reason we went down to Madison to look at the machine. Herself fell in love with them even from crappy Craigslist photos and nothing would do but to go get that machine. I'm looking forward to using it myself as Charlee says the 115s are very nice for sewing. I also want to check out the differences between using a oscillating hook (66) and rotating hook (115) on a treadle. Maybe even a vibrating shuttle (the 27 that's down stairs waiting for its chance in front of the camera). Of course that will lead to my wanting hand cranks of each style as well so I'll have to find a rotary hand crank machine. Suggestions, anyone?
