For work on the sewing machine I'd definitely want blond. For the cabinet? Maybe, maybe not. The warmth of amber shellac is wonderful. Here's a UK site with blond dewaxed:

So, did you compare my finish with the dark brown Briwax to your Mahogany? I'm curious too.

Joe - I hadn't connected the threads. What we have is Antique Mahogany and it's definitely redder than you cabinet.

Here's another link for a French Polish at B&Q in the UK (and readily available at other retailers). I wonder if this would be ok?

I've got several cabinets that are going to get the Briwax treatment. From what I watched that stuff do to the parts of the 9W-7 cabinet I did not refinish, it will really make the other dark cabinets I've got look much better.

Since Glenn and Joe missed your question, I will answer it! I have had to re-veneer several cabinets! Sometimes, you will get lucky and all the veneer is still there - just needs to be re-glued, refinished! But, if a cabinet has veneer missing, yes you will have to re-veneer the top!

For mjhae ss,
Yes I replaced the veneer on the top lid, read about it here:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/vintage...e-t204377.html

Nancy,
I have patched missing parts on veneer with pieces from other projects. The thing is you need to match the grain as close as you can and the type of wood. If you get a different type of wood you'll have to play around with the stains to make the colors match.
