I'm searching for a paper piece pattern for a gear/cog... I've tried making one and I'm not very apt in the pattern making department... If anyone has a pattern I'd be extremely grateful!! My dad machines gears and I'd really like to make him a gear...

You could make blocks of different gears - lot of interesting shapes.
The first few images aren't so detailed, you should be able to easily zig-zag around the edges.

Thanks so much for your suggestions (and welcome!!)... I've not ventured into applique as of yet, but it may be my only option.. I actually did to the google/images bit and tried to design my own pattern.. the result was.... not nice and very over whelming for me. Honestly, applique scares me...

I adore Sewhooked and FandominStiches!! I have put in a request, but I'm also VERY impatient!!

I don't know if this will help you out but.....

Here's a modified wheel from EQ.

You can enlarge it to whatever size you want - if the cogs are too big, you can chop them down.

Cut the ring of cogs out. You can paper piece the ring, and then reattach it to your center circle.

Or you can do it in quarters - like a NYBeauty block, with cogs instead of spikes.



And you should investigate fusible applique.
So very easy and quick.
Really.
If you were thinking of pp-ing this block, you have no need to be scared of applique.

You could try Wonder-under or Steam-A-Seam 2 lite (if those are available where you live),
and there are many other products out there.

With the Steam-A-Seam 2 Lite (short version),
you can print the pattern right on the fusible paper backing,
place on fabric,
cut out the gear motif,
pull off the paper,
and place on the background fabric.
Almost done.

A little zig zag around the edges to keep them down.

And...done.

How easy was that?

Looks like a sort of modified NYB for the corners with a simple patchwork cross.

So applique, it's not the fusing, etc.. it's the stich around the edges.. my machine is not great and my ability to control it is even worse... I will eventually try applique, but I know how to paper piece and really enjoy it...

I like the 'Evening Star' at Swimbikequilt and think I could modify it to work, but I REALLY like the Denyse Schmidt Cog & Wheel...
