can you recommend prices for jams, jellies and butters?
My husband and daughter belong to an garden group that is having their first home made bazaar tomorrow night. Daughter has decided to learn to can the above items but hasn't a clue how to determine the prices. We are well aware of the fact that we will never be able to recoup the cost of labor. We live in S. Cal where the prices seem to be higher than in most other states. We will really appreciate any advice you might provide.

Around here good homemade jam for the 1/2 pint size sells for $4.50 - $5.00. Ia have seen some for a bit higher but mostly at the $5.00 range..

Hmm. I replied to this thread yesterday but apparently it didn't show up. We sell them at the local craft fair for $3.00 1/2 pint for regular jam/ jellie and $3.50 for wild stuff like prickly pear, pomegranet, wild plum or mesquite. Pickles go for $4.00 - 5.00 a pint. The only time I made pints jars of jam (peach conserve) I charged $5.00.

A little concerned that your DD is learning to can and will be selling her first efforts? Maybe she should practice first to make sure she is doing everything right.

I am sure your DD had the help from her parents or someone. I admire some of our next generation for doing what are some dying traditions and trades. I would be proud to have my daughter learn the trade and continue it. Kudos to her and you 2 as parents for raising what sounds like a hard working young lady. I hope her business of selling goes great! Great job teaching your DD how you have to work for things in this world. I personally love canning and freezing. Grew up watching my Momma, not only did I learn how to do the work, but a since of pride knowing I could do this for my on family some day.
