Nice quilt you've made him. I, too, have the quilt that you have underneath (the stars); also purchased mine from J.C. Penney approx. 18 yrs. ago 
Mine was washed so many times, it was beginning to become too worn in places = edges of quilt as it has borders but really never had a binding on it. I also have the pillow shams and wallpaper border that matches the quilt. It was incentive for me to make a quilt myself some day!
