Wow! I keep returning to this thread to see the replies that have been made. Your comments have made me feel so much better. I am going Sunday for an introductory lesson and then will schedule the classes that they provide. In the mean time, my projects are stacking up to be used on the new machine. Thanks to everyone for your comments--it has reassured me that it will be a fantastic adventure.

Just want to add my support for Bernina...I have the original 830 purchased in mid 70s...and cannot bring myself to ever part with it to upgrade to the newer models...it still sews beautifully....when I bought it, I told myself it would be the only machine I would ever need...and still seems be to true...it was also overwhelmingly at the time with all the stitch options but I took the classes and am still learning as I try new projects....have fun and enjoy the adventure...

I have a Bernina 730 and adore it! You need to take your Machine Mastery classes (free for as many times as you want to take them at my local Bernina store). In fact, take the classes, use what you learn, and then go back and take them again. You'll be surprised how much more you'll be able to absorb the second time around when you are more relaxed. You seem a bit frightened and overwhelmed, but be assured that most machines work approximately the same way. It's like when you buy a new car, or borrow a friend's car...they look different but you can quickly get the hang of it. In the case of a Bernina, it is well worth the effort to learn the new machine because you will never go back to any other machine. Bernina is the best machine on the market for stitch quality and performance IMHO. Trust that with helpful teachers, as I have found Bernina teachers to be, you will be a convert in no time! Relax and enjoy this gift, and tell DH he chose the most amazing gift for you!

I just got a Bernina 530, and I love it. I have to still take my lessons, but watched the video, that came with the machine. I takes a little getting used to, but what a "dream machine" you will love it!!!!!

Don't have a Bernina, but suppose to be one of the best. Play with her and I think you will fall in love.

I have had my Bernina Activa 215 for 6 years and my 10 year old son even learned to sew on it. He had taken a couple classes on my old white sewing machine. He went with me to the classes to learn how to use it. This way if I forgot how to do something on the machine--he knew how it should be done. He is presently working on his 4th quilt and 2 years ago he was asked to be a presenter at the local quilt show as part as the young quilter as both presenter were 14 years old. Enjoy the Bernina. He recently showed his grandma the Bernina and she now wants a Bernina instead of a Viking.

What a great machine, nothing better than a Bernina. Read through your manual and take it one step at a time. After taking your classes you will get the hang of it. You will be surprised after sewing on it how much better it is to sew on than an older machine. You will love it ! ! ! What a great gift, he couldn't have chosen a better machine. :0)

Steady Stiching

Schoolteacher.....You can do it...you just need to cut yourself some fabric to practice on. Get out the manuel and take it one chapter at a time.
I went from using a 1970 singer to using a Babylock Esante...I taught myself with no classes how to use the embroidery module, download patterns etc.
