Default Nurse Bonnie - Sneak peek #2 - Quilt for Quilters- feedback needed!

    Hi all,
See below a picture of the center of the quilt all in purples. Around the center I am placing a "boarder" of applique tulips, as you can see the one on the upper left.

I wanted to include more colors so I decided to add yellows and oranges on the applique tulip, while all the stems and leaves will be of the same fabric as I am showing. Each of the surrounding blocks will have for background the center fabrics.

Question #1: What do you think, will it be ok that yellows and oranges don't show up in the center at all?
Question #2: Should I add some dark purple sashing between the center and this new row?

Your feed back is much appreciated.

Questions #3 about applique: What is tour trick to prevent that the background bleeds through the applique piece?

I think it looks fine even thought yellow and orange do not show up in middle. Dark purble would look good areound center, but also very pretty like it is!! Sorry do not have an answer for #3

It's going to be very pretty. I would add a narrow strip of a pretty purple before the appliqued blocks.

Hi Andrea- your quilt is looking great! I love the center of purples and white fabrics. Its very striking. (Question 2): I like the idea of adding a dark purple border between the center blocks and your applique blocks. That would frame it nicely and make the whole presentation of the quilt pop. (Question 1):I think it will look just fine with the added colors on applique blocks only.
Another idea for your applique could be to make some of the flowers smaller than others just for variety. (Question #3): I don't have any tips or tricks on preventing bleeding through applique pieces but have not had that problem in the few appliques I have done. I do use double stick fusible web called Steam-A-Seam 2 with my applique projects. It helps to secure the applique pieces well to the quilt.
Thanks for sharing the progress of your quilt. Its coming along so nicely!

    1. I think that yellow flowers will look great, I am not so sure about yellow and ornge. 2. Yes I would add a dark purple shashing and bind it with the same dark purple. Also you might think about putting a yellow block in the center of your white X's on your top. That would bring your yellow in the center of your quilt, although it will look good without it. 3. If you use a darker background than your applique peice it will usally bleed through. You might want to use the white background for the flowers and put a 1" sashing of purple around the applique blocks. What ever you chose to do it is going to be a Beautiful quilt. Lynn

#1: yellow and purple are complementary colors. When next to each other they command attention. The center is beautiful. Having yellow and/or orange in only the exterior blocks will draw the eye to the outside. I think the lightest colored squares could be very pale yellow print and yellow corner stones in the sashing.
#2: an instructor (I think it was Ruth McDowel) says, "make visual decisions visually." Put some dark purple fabric where you're thinking of putting it. Then decide.
#3: to avoid bleeding I can think of 2 solutions. One is is to cut out the background fabric behind the applique. The second is to first face the applique with a light weight interlining of white.

I love your quilt! I kind of like the idea of the dark border between the center and appliqué . It would still be pretty either way.

Petthefabric is right about the applique question. The easiest way to prvent the bleedthrough without adding bulk is to trim out the background behind the applique. Interfacing also works but I never like the hand on it after - its too stiff regardless of weight. Just my preference.
