I can relate to Linda's post. I remember riding my bike to the local market, about 3/4 mile away (we lived in the suburbs) to pick up stuff for my mom. My reward was being allowed to buy myself a candy bar ... 5 cents! And these were the big ones! My favorite was Peppermint Patty .. good news, they are still around!

My mom, too, wouldn't drive on the interstate when it finally opened up. She knew her way to the places she wanted to go, and it didn't matter if there was a faster way. And don't ask her to look at a map to find a better way! I think she was one of those folks that really was left-handed, but was not allowed to be, if you know what I mean. She was always doing things backwards ... like dealing cards in the wrong direction. So, N,S,E,W and right/left were always a challenge for her. Hey, 4 kids also, like Linda's mom!

Default Are you ready?

Today’s clue will be posted in 2 separate postings, This is Part 1 and will be immediately followed by Part 2.

I know how upsetting this mystery has been and I don’t want to create any more stress for any of you. Therefore, I am going to give you all the final steps, and when you finish part 2, your runner will be completed. Finished it will measure about 38” x 18”. If you want it longer or shorter, add or subtract one of the 9-1/2” blocks. If resizing the runner, you probably need to adjust the width of your interior and exterior sashing, and to make more or less of the number of border blocks called for, I haven’t made the runner in a different size, but I know you will be able to resize it with no problem.

Here is the first posting.

Part 1
From color B cut 6 pieces at 4-1/8” square. Cut in half diagonally. Sew a B triangle to an A-C triangle you made from clue 2 last week. Press and trim to 3-½” square. You will have 12 of this block.

Cut 3 blocks of A at 3-½” square.

Assemble three blocks, using the pieces you have cut and sewn from this week and last. Press. The block will measure unfinished at 9-½” square.

Make sashing from color D
Cut a piece of color D at 1-½” wide and 19”. Cut this in half, two pieces measuring 1-1/2” by 9-1/2”.

Connect the 3 large pieced blocks with the two 1-1/2” wide pieces as shown.

Cut 2 WOF of D at 1” wide. Cut a 9-1/2” piece from each strip – this way you won’t have to piece your sashing. Sew 9-1/2” long pieces at each of the 9-1/2” sides. Press. Sew remaining pieces to the long side. Press and trim as needed.

Part 2 is next in line.

Default Part 2

Part B, what would have been final and 4th clue

Begin to make your border pieces.
At this point you may wish to not use your fabrics in the same designation of A B C as used in making the blocks. For this part, the border, use your favorite color/pattern for A as this will show the most, your second favorite for B as it will show less, and the least favorite for C., for this will only show a small amount in the border.

From color A cut 1 WOF at 3-1/2” wide. From color D cut 1 WOF at 1-1/2” wide. Using scant ¼” seams sew these 2 strips long sides together. Press. Piece will be WOF and 4-12” wide. Cut 14 segments, each 2-1/2” wide.

From color B cut 1 WOF at 2-1/2” wide. From Color D cut 1 WOF at 2-1/2” wide. Using scant ¼” seams sew these 2 strips long side together. Press. Piece will be WOF and 4-1/2” wide. Cut 14 segments each 2-1/2” wide.

From color C cut 1 WOF at 1-1/2” wide. From color D cut 1 WOF at 3-1/2” wide. Using scant ¼” seams sew these 2 strips long sides together. Press. Piece will be WOF and 4-12” wide. Cut 12 segments, each 2-1/2” wide.

As shown, sew A B C together. Repeat making 12 of the ABC units.
Sew A B together. Repeat 2 making 2 of the AB units.

Take 5 of the ABC pieces and sew together, keeping color D at same edge. Line up the ends of your D color, and start sewing from this edge. I didn’t, and my outer edge needed to be trimmed. Make a second piece in this manner

Take an ABC and an AB and sew together, keeping color D at same edge and sewing from the D edge. Repeat. You are making 2 strips that have a total of 5 segments each.

Make the corner blocks:
From your scraps of A B and C, you will need scraps 2-1/2” wide. For the center strip I would suggest you use the one fabric you would like to be most prominent which would be your new A and cut 4 pieces about 6-1/2” long. From the other two colors, cut 4 each about 4-1/2”. Stagger the seams as shown in the picture, press well, and trim to make the block 4-1/2” square.

Sew a long border segment to the long edge. Repeat with other side.

Sew a corner block to each end of the short border segments. Sew these two segments to the short sides.

Original fabric requirements did not include yardage for the backing. Sandwich as desired. I use Warm and Natural on table runners, but some prefer flannel. Quilt as desired. I did a simple stitch in the ditch. Trim.

I included yardage in clue 1 for the binding to be cut from D in order to finish off the runner without distracting from the edge. Cut 3 WOF from D at desired width (I use 2-1/4” because I like a tight binding. My sister used 2” because she used flannel and it wasn’t as thick as the Warm and natural.. Join pieces together and sew to runner.

The pulled pork sounds great but I guess I'll save it for later as it's only 7:30 am and the quiche sounds better to my stomach.

Yep, we were a one car family and Dad drove it to work. I don't even remember how Mom got the groceries and we lived out in the country. Our store was Market Basket. Today, my husband and I have three cars. Sign of the times. One's an old truck though and we're getting rid of it.

Sunliten, What are you doing up at 3am.

Yikes, I forgot today was Saturday!!

And now for my finished trimmed and bound runner, and also my sister's runner. She is not on the QB nor is she an experienced quilter but she was over last weekend when I was sewing on my binding and she wanted to make runner. She took home the directions, and then came back yesterday to show me. She said it was ok for me to share with you. Hers is also a Christmas runner, but used lighter and an entirely different color scheme. I love them both!

Thanks Judy! Snowing here in Vermont, so I'm off to the sewing room. Photos later! Might change your directions.......the earlier wrong sized blocks might go into the border.

Thanks, Island, I'll pass that along.

That's my job, Caroline, keep you guessing until the end.

I didn't post a comment before, but I did like the way some of you were posting your ideas of how this would go together. Surprise surprise surprise - isn't that what "Gomer Pyle" used to say? Hee hee.
