I am reading an excellent book by Jennifer Chiaverini (who wrote all the Elm Creek Quilt books) called Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker, it is a fictionalized (but mostly true to life) story of Elizabeth Keckley. In it she describes Mrs. Keckley's specialized way of dressmaking. It's quite an interesting story so far, look for it at your local library!

I loved the quilt on the bed when Tommy Lee Jones is shown at the end if the movie. I loved it ! I also caught a glimpse of it in the previews if you hear Tommy Lee Jones voice look quick and you will see it. It is in tans and browns. Civil War prints with a 9patch and a plain block I think . Hope to see again.

I haven't seen the movie, but the DVD is for sale in Walmart now. I will probably buy it now that I know it has pretty quilts in it!!

I too read Jennifer Chiaverini's book Mrs Lincoln's Dressmaker. I found it a fascinating look back at our history. I have not read much historical fiction, so I can't compare it to other books. Life in Washington City in the 1860's, a black businesswoman, former slave, confidant to Mrs Lincoln, the difference in the classes. Excellent writing.

Always fun to catch a glimpse of a quilt in a movie!

We saw the movie, I remember seeing quilts but can't recall the patterns ... definitely going to buy it.
If you haven't seen the movie yet, don't miss it ! Daniel Day Lewis is fantastic, as always - he IS Lincoln ... and Tommy Lee Jones is perfect as cantankerous Thaddeus Stevens.

You might research Underground Railroad quilts to see if you recognize any of them. They were put out by the women to signal the men it was a safe house
