Have you ever used too much? I was doing my first large quilt and didn't want it to come apart. Anyway I used too much Dritz spray and my machine won't quilt it without breaking thread every few inches. Any ideas? I have half of it done so taking it out is not an option.

Maybe pin baste and rinse it out in the bathtub. I did this with a quilt that I had marked and didn't like the marking.

Could you use a different needle, maybe a denim needle?

Try cleaning the needle periodically with a swipe of rubbing alcohol? I'm thinking the problem is that the adhesive is accumulating on the needle and gumming it up.

I had this problem once when I used an off brand of spray adhesive, now I stick to 505. It was a frustrating process, but I did just what Prism99 suggested and it did work, luckily it was a lap quilt and not a bed size!

I wonder if putting a touch of Sullivan's silicone spray (be sure any product you use is safe for sewing machines) on a tiny piece of batting at the last thread guide before the needle might help the thread slide thru? I saw this suggested for delicate thread on my Sweet 16 site...it might be worth a try?

I use the dritz brand quite often, and yes it is possible to use too much. I found that if I let it sit for a day or two , it does not gum up the needle quite so bad. Depending on just how much you over sprayed .. you may still have to wipe your needle with an a scrap of batting that has alcohol on it. I learned like you are .. a little goes a long way.

I've never used the spray or the Elmer's Glue method. They both halfway scare me. Guess I'd rather bite the bullet and pin baste.

Have you tried giving the glued areas a spritz of water. And leave to dry. This may begin to soften the glue. Does this glue wash out after quilting?

I used too much of the spray adhesive on some letters for a large outdoor banner that I was making. Wanted to be sure they stayed where they belonged till I got them stitched on. Lol. Thought I was never going to get the stitching done because of the guck on my needle every few inches. Just kept pulling the residue off. Did find that if I slowed down with the speed of my stitching it helped some.
Since then I've been leery of using the spray. However thanks to the great hints from those on this board I'm willing to give it another try, but I'm certainly not going to spray nearly as heavily next time.
