you can bring a scissors on a plan, I forgot the size that it has to be. When I went on my international trip I read through on the airlines site of the things you can bring. Dryal is a large white heavy plastic bag, where you put the cloth and a wet cloth (kind of like a dryer sheet) that comes with the product. Put in dryer and it's like dry cleaning at home.
I have been collecting old plaid flannel shirts to make a log cabin or simular one day. Most of what I have is from family members for memories. Haven't started it yet, for I'm still needing more. Wool wouldn't do well down in Louisisana. I can only imagine that it would be one heavy quilt. Lucky you for such a great find.

If it were me, and the wool is about the same weight, I would hand wash in cold water and lay out to dry. Then piece them at their original weight. Some wool, when you felt it, is too heavy for a quilt. My dad made quilts the year I was born out of old wool clothing, as He and mom added the need for more bedding, as they were living with my Grandad. They wear well and are very comfortable and warm. I think they used flannel in dark colors for backing and tied them. To clean them the women would put them out on the snow in the winter. The dirt went into the snow and quilt was clean. Sort of freeze dried the dirt out into the snow. You could in this day and age, wash in cold water and hang to dry or have them dry cleaned to keep the original feel of the wool.
