My 5-year old granddaughter and I made a 9-patch sofa pillow and we gave it to her parents for Christmas. If I remember correctly, she pushed the pedal and I guided the fabric under the needle (with her help, of course). She had selected the fabric, and when we were done I contributed a 14-inch pillow form and finished off the cover. She was VERY proud and we still have a photo of her holding the pillow in front of her and smiling. Nice.

A big 4 patch is easy to do - easier than a pillow case. My niece and nephew were 7 & 8 respectively when they sewed their first quilts. The 4 patch gave them an early success. Their quilts were baby size, but done in fabrics of their choice. They 'shopped' in my stash for their fabrics.

The kids also liked using the "fancy" stitches on my sewing machine for the quilting - after I anchored the sandwich with basting. They were very happy with the fruits of their labor! Me, too, as it helped them get through a rainy weekend!

i agree totally grace! We may get rain tomorrow so will have those ideas ready for choosing, and will let her pick her fabric as well!

I am so thankful for everyone's ideas! I never would have come up with so many.... You all are terrific! Not only did you help with what to make, you gave me suggestions on how! All of your sewing machine and young girls ideas are very appreciated! I am not hoping for rain, but if it does, i will post pictures of what is created in the sewing corner! Many thanks, again!

Pot holders are good. She can make lots of them for teacher gifts, gifts to Mom, the nice lady next door and on and on and on!! The drawstring bags are good ideas also.

my daughter's first sewing project was a pillow case. She liked making it. I have taught 2 little girls to sew crumb blocks, they were happy that nothing had to match.

A doll blanket make of squares and using a 1/4 inch foot with a guide so she gets a good seam allowance. My grandaughter age 6 did one and also there is a scottie dog made out of squares that kids love. I did the final sewing of the 2 sides together and she stuffed it and loved it. made one for her brother as well.

My granddaughter Sarah started sewing this weekend too, but she is 10. We are doing very basic doll clothes for "Michelle" who is the best dressed doll in America! Sarah also made a tote out of her old jeans skirt by cutting off the bottom and using it for the handles. The bling pockets made darling decorations on the front. We also have a pillow case planned and 4 inch blocks cut for a simple quilt. Have fun with your grands. The time with Sarah was so precious and a blast for both of us. I was shocked at how quickly she caught on and what a good job she did.

When granddaughters came from CO they wanted to do the same. Got easy PJ bottom pattern and made them we bought 2 tee shirts they picked out an embroidery design for the shirts and then there was a fashion show. Grandson who lives here made his Mom a pillow for mothers day...great seeing these children of today doing something other that gagets electronics...

I started my granddaughter with sewing 2 1/2 strips together and when she did that I had her make a snap bag to keep her sewing things (needles, thread, seam ripper and scissors) and she loved that. You can do this with the 5 year old also. After that I taught her the pillow case and she loved doing both. She lived in AL. then, now they live in CA so she is closer so the first thing she did when she came to visit she wanted to make a pillow case for her room. She is coming up when school is out and she is going to make her Daddy a quilt. We will be working with strips blocks and maybe some 9 patches. Happy quilting and let the little one in on it too, she is not to young.
