I have 2 quilts that my grandmother made back in the early 1900s. All hand stitched. For years, my aunt had kept them folded up all willy nilly in the cedar chest. When I inherited them, I was told that they should be refolded every so often to prevent the threads from breaking. Since then (almost 30 years now), I have been careful to pull them out and, if they were not on my bed, refold them every 6 months or so in the opposite direction.

I am with "ontheriver", all the quilts I have made are on beds, walls, sofas, RVs.... Makes me wonder if I will have one I can fold and put away. :-)
