My Pfaff has a ten inch throat, but I remember some quilters talking about eleven inch throats. I am sure someone will tell us what brand(s) .... Maybe there are even twelve inch ones??? Thirteen??? I have only been at this 3 years, and I am anxious to learn the answer to this question.

I love my Juki TL2010. It's about 9" throat, almost same width as my Viking Sapphire 830, however it's got more height and more room because it's narrower around the needle area than the Viking. The visibility is good and it's been awesome! On mine, the tension was perfect right out of the box, no tinkering whatsoever! It only does straight stitching though, so keep that in mind if you consider it. I bought it sight unseen based on the positive feedback I've read and after talking to my repair guy. The parts are all metal inside and he said it is a very reliable machine, rarely needing service. I paid about $1000. I got a Gidget 2 table for Christmas and I use that, along with a plastic folding table, when I quilt.

Brother makes a straight -stitch -only machine that most people use for quilting. I may be mistaken but I think the throat is 15 inches. Look on the Brother internet site, they have all the info on it and it is not that expensive either. Good luck in your search.

Bernina 820 has 12" throat.
If you are happy with your DSM, you might want to consider the HQ Sweet 16 ... 16" ... with lots of height which gives amazing visibility that you'll never get with a DSM>
