That was one of the 1st quilt books I got & I loved it. I also have Quilting For People Who Don't Have Time To Quilt & love it, too! I'm glad she's doing well!

How do I send a letter to Mary Ellen. Do you have an address? I would love to get in touch and have so so many fond memories of our times together. Thanks

"Hi Jan,
Mary Ellen is alive and doing fine in CA near [her son].
She lives in a retirement community, plays bingo and wins and loves it.
She has retired from the quilt world about 2 years ago. Just too much for
such a little lady. She does knit and crochet up a storm constantly. I
am sure she would love to hear from you. She is hard of hearing but I
know she would remember you.
Hope you are still in the quilt world. I am and still having a good time.
Nice to hear from you. J--"

Jennifer,

It has been several months, but I reached out to MEH through Jan Krueger at
Hearthside Quilters Nook

Please let me know if you hear from her; I did not, but my message may have gone astray.

There are people who come and go in our lives...they open doors and show you things that change you. One of the most influential people in my life was Mary Ellen Hopkins.
She showed me ways of making quilts that changed my life. Her humor was nothing short of brilliant.
Mary Ellen passed away this morning.
But I know she lives on in each of us that she helped along the way.
For those of you that have no idea who this wonderful woman was...you might want to find a copy of her book, It's Okay If You Sit On My Quilt or one of the other books she wrote. She was a pioneer in the quilting world.
I will miss her.

I've heard of her and I think it was on Nancy's notions or Alex Anderson's show. I'm sure it was one of the PBS shows.

Oh, Charlotte, I'm so sad. Thank you for advising us. She has been on my mind a lot the past couple of weeks, I guess I'm not surprised to hear this report, but still feel the loss.

I had a feeling that you were an MEH fan/student as I was when I took a class in Houston from you in the 90s. It was the class for which UPS "lost" your supplies and the morning of the class you were so upset and apologetic, I really felt for you. All the class tried to help you decide to go on as planned; so you split up what patterns you did have so that half of us worked on one part of the pattern and half worked on another. After lunch you came back to class with the "lost" delivery and we all rejoiced. I've loved you since then! You really cared about making that class a good experience for us all; and you succeeded.

I lived only 2 blocks from her shop in Santa Monica. My daughter and I took our first classes there.

I met Mary Ellen in the early 70's. I took a class from her on a week night and called in sick because I stayed up all night working on half square triangles. She was a true gem. Telling funny stories, getting us all enthused and ready to make a million quilts. I have a sweet picture of my sister, my daughter and her. I will cherish it forever!!! May she rest in peace. I'm certain she's teaching quilting on a whole new level!!
