    I do a lot of canning of tomatoes, salsa, and juice. Tonight we enjoyed a fresh tomato pie, the first time I have ever tried the recipe. Delish!

    We picked our first tomatoe today...only one is rady but have lots that are turning...we make sauce and can and have them all year long

    If I had lots I'd make some Tomato Jam. I'd never heard of it but an older friend said it's the only jam she eats. I went out and bought some tomatoes to make some for her. I should have cooked it longer but it was very nice even if a bit runny.

    Mine are just starting... and as I suspected about a month ago .. someone must have switched the tag as to the variety( before I purchased)... and a few of the plugs in the flat... I 've got cherry tomatoes, some about the size of a half dollar, and some about the size of a baseball. Color me not too happy!

    Yah, it's the other way around and then the little buggers take the part that is turning red! Had to pick four of them yesterday because the squirrels got them. I am trying to save them in the house if I can. I have the humongous Fantastic tomatoes - one slice fills a whole piece of bread! I think the squirrels already know that!

    They don't take the grape or cherry tomatoes either. You'd think they'd like the ones they could handle better. But then I get to pick them and pop 'em in my mouth and just let them explode. Miss Bess (avatar) loves the little tomatoes also and the other day she popped on and it drooled all over the place. She looked at me so weird - "Did I do that?????" Like the time she caught a moth in her mouth, opened up her mouth and it flew out. Dogs do have quizzical looks about them. Happy tomatoes!!!!! Edie

    This is the first year my raised bed produced decent tomatoes. Love them ripe and love fried green tomatoes. My friend gave me some Romas still green and they made the best fried have ever done. They don't collapse while cooking like others do. Will have at least one Roma plant next year.

    Cut them in chunks, add some fresh basil and a little bit of balsamic vinegar. Some fresh mozzarella chunks are good added too. I also add garlic sometimes.

    I live in Florida, use to live in Iowa, grew up there. I haven't been able to grow descent tomatoes here, I had good ones in Iowa, a bunch of them. Sounds tasty!

    Many years ago when I had a fairly large garden, I canned some tomatoes, and I also made tomato sauce and froze it in small margarine containers - then when I ran out of them, I popped them out and put them in zip-lock bags and put them back in the freezer. I did not buy tomato sauce for nearly a year, made the garden worth the effort, but the best part was going out to the garden and picking tomatoes for tomato and mayonnaise sandwiches that I loved as a kid, plus I loved to eat them sliced with just a little salt. My husband never understood how I could eat sliced tomatoes until I grew my own, and my friends at our camp enjoyed getting bags of fresh tomatoes.

    Count your blessings! We have had so much rain in NC this summer that my plants stopped growing (and didn't die!). You may can 1 jar of tomatoes at the time. They are great to eat in the winter!
