I have some of those, I tied some hemp around the top of them( 2 together and one hanging lower) and tied a bow and have them hanging from shelf with shaker pegs. They also have thread on them. Seen some on a Christmas wreath one time too.

They also look like some may be the old textile mill bobbins....I think they were called "pirns" or something like that, held a huge amount of yarn; I remember seeing them when I worked at one of the southern textile mills...
