I have made a round paper pieced quilt block about 24 inches in diameter. I am having trouble with borders. I did a 1 inch border around and it laid pretty flat, my first attempt at bias borders. Now I made a 3 1/2" border to set it off and it is not working. I did my 45 degree, I think, bias border., any hints would be appreciated.

If your binding is bias, it will go around the circle nicely. You do need to make sure you are not stretching the bias as this will cause it to pull up the circle edge. I like to use my stiletto and kind of push the binding towards the needle as you sew the bias binding to the circle. Pushing the bias binding towards the needle gives the binding enough extra ease to lay flat when finished.

Thanks, I hope I made it bias. I followed directions for 45 degree and all. I feel like I don't have enough border and maybe that is why it is pulling up. I will add a little more and maybe I stretched it too. I will keep you posted on what I do.

I would probably make arcs for borders.

I agree. I'm not clear whether you're trying to make a border or binding.

I agree with charsuewilson. If you are adding a border, it must be done in arcs, not bias. I am surprised you got the 1" border to lay flat. The binding will need to be bias. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the replies. The pattern did call for arcs but it made it a square and I wanted it to be a round border not binding. The 1" border sort of lies flat but once I get it quilted it will work. I am going without a border on the round and just going to sandwich it as is. I will get a picture on when I have it done. I really enjoy this site as I have learned a lot from reading and asking some questions.

I made an approximately 15" border on a circle table topper. You have to cut it out in wedges. I then sewed all the wedges together and ended up with a unit that looked like a giant donut. I then carefully pinned and attached to my center. It came out really nice and flat but I was really concerned while drafting it. If you look carefully you can see my seam lines in the border.
