Needle tatting is real easy to take along, a small pencil box will work, I keep my thread in small zip lock bags to keep it clean and just pull when needed. It also is a great conversation starter!

Dedemac, Thanks for the link. Do you know if needle tatting is easier than shuttle? I learned to macrame' years ago, when they still had Home Ec in school .. would definitely need a refresher!

Lynnie, Oh your tales of woe are so well, woeful...lol.. I have to say when I read the words kitty, medicine, paw, quilt fabric I was thinking "This isn't going to turn out well..." If you don't end up with that ornament I think you should at least get a "Quimmy" - Quilt Board version of Emmy ..our 1st winner ever, woo-hoo!! You had me at Hello...er, I mean you had me at " dh watches every game on 62" tv, game within game." Oh girl! You have my sympathies! I am lucky dh goes to our son's house to watch Sunday football!
My quilty friend who teaches tatting uses this book, it comes with a "free" dvd:
http://www.amazon.com/Learn-Tat-DVD-...s=tatting+book
Have a great night all,
Kif

Forgot to add friend uses a shuttle, so that book would be shuttle tatting..not sure if it covers needle tatting, too.

Got some beautiful Christmas fat quarters this week at sew club. Now I have to decide what to do with it!! So many choices - spend more time oohing and aahing over the possibilities than I do working on the projects - hehe.

Okay,
So I found and ordered a tatting book/needle set and just ordered it. Dedemac, I will tell dh it was a great gal on QB whose work was so inspiring I just had to order a tatting book and try it! I am very fortunate dh never says a word about my hobby spending..I don't say a word about his hunting/fishing/buying for vintage camaro he has owned since he was 14 spending either...

Yes that sounds like exactly what my mom did and I know my niece has all the thread for it to. I still have the things my mom made from it somewheres. I'll have to ask her for it . I know they don't do it anymore.

For me needle tatting is much easier, I can control my stitches better. The biggest thing is to match the size of the needle to the size of the thread. Once you get the basics of how the piece is created it does not matter what book you use for most patterns. The only thing I have not figured out how to do is the long single threads which is inherent to shuttle tatting.
