How sweet! Would be a good starter machine for kids, and sounds perfect for your situation. Do enjoy it. You got a great bargain.

I'm pretty sure 3 versions of the featherweight have been produced by Singer. The vintage black (and white) featherweights are the ones most quilters covet. What you have is the middle version; can be quite a nice lightweight, portable machine. That one is not very well known. It is the newest featherweight that got relatively bad reviews. Some people like its very retro styling.

Thanks, Prism! Good to know that what I have is not the poorly reviewed one! I kind of like it, and when I actually get using it, I hope that I will like it even better!

I really don't know. The only reason I knew that the Singer company had produced a later "featherweight" model was because a dealer told me about it. I was looking for a vintage featherweight at the time, and he didn't have any but did have the model pictured in this thread. He said it was a great little lightweight machine that would be a good alternative to the vintage version, but I didn't buy it. (It was a lot more than $10!!! This was quite a few years ago.)

That's cute. Haven't seen one like that here in Australia. Long as it works and you enjoy it what does it matter what others think. And a great bargain as well. ENJOY
