Are you going to use fusible or not? If you use fusible and it's a wallhanging, you can go with a more open stitch. I think it depends also on your thread. If I don't want stitching to show, I use YLI nylon monofilament and a hem stitch (3 straight stitches along the edge and then a zag into the other fabric. Since it's a night sky, I'm wondering if you could use silver thread for that. Maybe even a variegated metallic in blue and green. You could experiment with a decorative stitch too. I always seem to like the feather stitch when I want a fancy stitch to show.

TnBecky -- I think you should make the quilt just the way you desire. This is a comfort quilt for someone recovering from surgery. You can make it any way you want! And I'm sure he will appreciate the time and effort you put into making it. I would be careful if you use fusible, to be sure it is very lightweight. You want it to be snuggly and soft.
Wasn't your question about stitches to use?? I'd probably use a buttonhole stitch if I were doing it. Have fun and be sure and post the finished quilt. Kathy

Thank you Kathy for your kind words & suggesting the blanket stitch. You have been very encouraging & I greatly appreciate it.

I really like the blanket stitch my machine does. If you do it in a dark green it will add to the grassy look. It's really sweet of you to do this for your neighbor.

I would go with the blanket stitch. I did a Captain America Shield on my sons baby quilt and that seemed to work the best!

This is why he said to just make something simple when ever you can. Well a year later I really want to make a quilt closer to what he described. He will be having knee replacement surgery in the next couple of months, so I want him to have something nice & warm while he sleeps in his recliner.
This is a wall hanging that I did for my son. Hopefully, it will help you design your friend's quilt. I cut the grass out (fussy cut it) so that it looked 3D. I also just stitched a single line around each appliqued piece. However, this is a wall hanging and will not be washed often. I have watched videos of applying raw-edge applique and the "blanket stitch" was used and looked great.

Yes, if the neighbour agrees ... but please don't make it a surprise, otherwise you risk their disappointment, and even worse, perhaps affect your neighbourly friendship.

S/He may have other reasons why the simplicity is desired and that is not for you to decide otherwise.
I agree. This seems like it could be one of those ' they don't appreciate all my time and talent' situations. Just because YOU would like more, doesn't mean they would. They asked for the simplicity of the moon and stars, and I would go with that... Then if you want one with grass and a house, you can make one for your own enjoyment.
