Hi,
How about rolling the fabric and color coordinate them in the slots?

I would use it to store all my yarn. You'd be able to keep it all in one place and it would look very cheerful with all different colors in it...

Will the Closet Maid cubbie drawers fit in this? That is the route I would go. Store fabric.

Awesome! You could roll fabric, or extra blankets, etc. Yes. Maybe sand it a little, and paint it.....

Brenda M's idea was excellent -- prime the wood first with a good wood primer (like Kilz), and with a good coat of white paint it will be wonderful to roll up your fabrics in color sections, then Christmas, batiks, metallic, misc prints (sky, bricks, travel fabrics, etc), baby, child, etc. I'd use the sides to install brads for hanging rulers, and maybe install your thread racks & quilting templates, etc. I probably would paint the front of the wood sections a contrasting color, or decorate with metal tacks of some sort or glue ribbon or use some of the fabric tape measures, etc., to glam it up a bit.

My husband made two shelves like this for our daughter. She painted them black & used them for DVD's & CD's. Worked perfectly.

I would remove all the outside boards and use them to square up the other shelves

Each cubby hole a different sewing tool that can be difficult to store/locate. ie one for pin boxes/clips/needle packets, another for packs/bags of safety pins of different sizes, another for pens/pencils/markers, another for ponces, another for gloves etc and don't forget one for the camera to snap those pics of all your amazing creations!
