Default What QBOTM for new young seamstresses?

I have a group of young girls that have gone through a basic sewing class. They would like to do a QBOTM. It needs to be simple. Does anyone have a book or resource or list of blocks or lessons that would be easy?

Thanks!

I have taught you elementary girls using the book that I found many years at JAF and still is sold there. It is called "Quilts for Baby" by Ursula Reikes. They are just very basic quilt patterns. I make a lot of charity quilts and you can double the blocks to make a larger quilt.

Alex Anderson's *Keep on Quilting* is a good 'sampler type' quilt book- has 12 blocks that all are star blocks-with different centers- each block teaches a new technique- so is a great choice for a monthly program.

If you google "easy quilt blocks" you will find several sites to choose from.

Keep it simple!
As new sewists, it's important that they get that feel of accomplishment.

How about a simple patchwork quilt of all squares?
They could choose two fabrics ... or many different ones, even a charm pack.
All according to their personal interests.
Some will go with an alternating pattern.
Some will decide on diagonals.
And some will just go all random.
You could encourage them to colour in the pattern they want on a grid.

Do it as a 4P to help them them learn about matching seams.
Then join the 4Ps together to make the quilt.

More detailed patterns can come later once they get more confident in their abilities.
For now, let them see completion and success ........ with huge smiles!

A 9-patch block would be pretty simple. That's what I did my first quilt with. You could do something that is made of HST. You can get smaller squares that way that look really fancy and it's only sewing straight lines. Pinwheels made of HST can be really beautiful. Good luck!

They are looking for something we can do in lessons for 9-12 months, that is why I was thinking of a simple sampler.

Ckcowl, that book looks GREAT, but its confusing in the format it comes in, and it says the disc info is on their website, (At least on Amazon) and I can't find it on the publishers website

What about using the blocks from the Craftsy BOTM classes? (There are two free classes right now.)

You could teach them the block in person, but they could also use the lesson online if they want a refresher.

I second the advice to visit www.quilterscache.com (with the girls) and pick some easy blocks. I did a star sampler quilt on another forum, and each person picked a star block that we each made at home with our own fabrics. It stretched my capabilities a bit, and I ended up with one of my most favorite quilts ever.

Each block can be a separate lesson.
