I like to machine sew to the front, then hand stitch to the back.

I stitch to the back and flip over to the front and sew it. I use clear thread in the bobbin throughout the process and am extremely pleased with the results. The worst part of the whole quilting process is now over and done with in a flash with no fuss or bother.

I stitch mine to the back, then the front. All by machine. Much easier for my hands.

I machine sew all my bindings. From the front first making sure that the binding lines up evenly with the quilt edge. I then press, pin on the back making sure the stitch line is covered, and stitch in the ditch from the front. It's taken me a few quilts to get it right, but I perfected the technique to where I'm more than pleased with the result. I've tried every way there is to machine sew bindings because I make so many comfort quilts. This works the best for me.

If I am sewing my binding on all by machine (which I always do now), you sew it on the back and fold over and machine sew on front. If you want to sew binding on by machine and turn over and hand sew, then you sew on the front.

Here is a sample where the flange is beige and the thread stitched along it looks nice with the beige thread matching the backing.

Drum roll please. I just attached my first traditional binding. I've avoided it til now with serging tying or self binding. . Even though I glued the $&@ thing down I still had missed spots on the back when I SITD in the front. I ended up having to hand stitch the gaps. How DO you place it to be sure the SITD will catch the back? Yes I used a walking foot and 2.5in binding. Now I'm frustrated. All tips are welcomed.

I pretty much do as above. But here is where I differ.....when I final trim the sandwich before applying binding, I cut leaving 1/4" of batting, backing extending beyond the top's edge....cut binding 2 1/2" fold in half, sew with walking foot onto front using quilt edge as "edge of quilt" sewing 1/4" in from that..... Then fold over, and if I am going to m/s either use threads that will blend into fabs...or if necessary invisible thread on top....since I use muslin on back no color problem there...and carefully sew in that front ditch......personally, I prefer to hand sew that back down, but if a charity, utility, baby will m/s.
Read somewhere a long time ago by leaving that xtra 1/4" on edges, gives more body to that bound edge...anyway, works for me...

I like to sew the binding to the front first if I hand stitch to the back but if I machine sew the binding I like to sew it to the back first & bring it to the front because if you do slip a little bit, it barely noticeable. I just figured out recently that I could actually sew it on by machine. I use a 1/4" stitch then line the edge with the previous stitching (just a tad bit over that stitching line) & line the edge with the middle line of the foot. I was excited when I figured out I could do this & make it look good.

I don`t use a walking foot, I use my A foot from my machine (viking) I find the markings on my foot help me alot.
