I don't buy a lot of precuts, but I have found that the 5" charm packs are wonderful for an applique stash. Many scrappy applique patterns use a small amount of fabric for the pieces and I can get the look I want without having to make swiss cheese of my yardage - plus they store easily.

I just purchased my first jelly roll, and it will be my last.
I like to pre wash so nothing less than a fat quarter for me.
Yardage gives you more opportunities, your not limited to 2 1/2".

I buy lots of pre-cuts because I have trouble putting colors together and with a pre-cut package all the line is there. then I can add solids if I want. The 5" charms are great for Dresden plates. I make a lot of table runners with those and each charm makes 2 blades. I know the cost of the pre-cuts vs yardage is not so good, but I like the fact that it's all together in one package.

I just finished a number of Civil War reproductions and batiks charm packs, mostly Moda, for making 2 Dear Jane quilts. I wanted the variety of the fabrics so this was a great way to get it.
I have used charms and jelly rolls in other projects and loved using them.
