We have all grand boys-------find out what he likes and just make strips or squares with sashing. I have one of horses; 1/4 yd x 44 across; each row a different horse pictures fabric and with a black or brown wood look sashing between makes a great quilt for a boy; or various sports squares make a good one. But first of all--have fun doing it.

I did one for my nephew last year (when he was 11) and for his I did a variety of simple square blocks in a variety of sizes; all the fabrics were dragons, skeletons or flames. (All designs that he likes on his clothes.) He really liked it! I wasn't sure if 11 year old boys liked any kind of quilts but he liked his. I backed it in dark grey flannel.

I made my 13 year old son a quilt with flannel fabric from the wool and needle line. Very soft, very masculine. I did a brick pattern and he absolutely loves it.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. It will be a while, but I will post when I've got it together. Happy New Year.

I made a quilt for three grandsons, according to what their interests were. One robot quilt, one puppy quilt and one library bookshelf quilt - all full size. They loved them!

How about a nice carpenter's star with green or even dark blue?

I finally chose City Blocks, using a variety of fabric complimenting Ohio State fabric I'd collected and music-y pieces. My challenge now is the border. After many hours in fabric stores, I bought (and cut) fabric for the border. It looked great in the LQS, but now I'm not too keen on it. I think it is too busy for the border and perhaps something "quieter" would be better. I was going to post photos, but that isn't working for me today either. :/
