Getting ready for retirement - upstairs or main?
#72
I'd add it one the main floor, if you have a choice. I always wanted a 2-story house, but ended up with a ranch. As I get older, I, glad for the ranch. I'm planning to move the laundry up from the basement soon, so I don't have to to those stairs.

I vote for the main floor to sew, and I would not create a second-floor space over the master bedroom for the grand's - they could end up keeping you awake nights or waking you up before dawn! We have our master bedroom over our kitchen/living area and it can get noisy when all the twenty-thirty-somthings are home yakking well into the wee hours. I love the visits but I can live without the racket.

I have my sewing room upstairs. Bought the house that way with a sewing room already set up. While everyone drools over it, I wouldn't have another one upstairs. I spend all my time running up and downstairs. My dh calls me and back and forth I go. Laundry or baking whatever, I am up and down. On the plus side, you don't have to worry no matter how messing yr room gets upstairs, no one sees it. I really believe I would have more time to sew if it was on the main floor.
wow, you really get good exercise......just never hurt your knees and you will have great core exercise

Let me put on my Exercise Physiologist (with an emphasis on gerontology) hat and offer another point of view. If you're knees are already bothering you, then by all means put your sewing room downstairs. However if they're not, unless you do A LOT of exercise already, going up and down those stairs is good for you. It also gets you up from the machine occasionally. If you're like me you know you should take more breaks than you do.
I have my sewing room upstairs. I mentally complain sometimes about going downstairs but then I think about the seniors I work with in a continuing care community and remind myself how important it is to be able to do steps at 80 if I want to live independently then.

I vote for down stairs. We just moved to a one level home, even though I am only 60 and quite energetic, and it has nothing to do with my knees. I've developed a central balance disorder that makes stairs impossible while carrying anything. It's not just the knees that can come up and bite you! But the single story is just what I needed and it works great!
