I have the ruler. I cut some scraps to see what I could do with it and other than just lining up row after row of the triangle and sides I can't figure what to do with them. I have looked for patterns and always just come up with a youtube video showing how to cut them.

Anybody have some pattern names I can look into getting with some pattern ideas. About to put the rulers in the bottom of a drawer never to be seen again.

Thanks for any help or ideas.

Fifty four forty or fight block. Tri-recs used for star points. That is the one thatjumps to my mind.

I'm sure the tri rec can be used (54-40 fight block) for 'Tennessee Waltz', also for 'Emily's Wedding', and Gracie's Garden'. All of which, to me, are extremely stunning quilt patterns. Now that I have the rulers, I wouldn't want to be without them.

I found images also but want directions. I can't just look at an image and get it right. The stars are pretty and have a square in the center and on each corner. So if my ruler is 6 1/2 inches would I make the square same or make it smaller to compensate for seam allowances on the other blocks once sewed up. This is why I need some good directions.

the images will link you to patterns or pattern names used in the images. yes, a little detective work is required. That's how I find stuff I'm interested in.

why not sew up a small sample to see what's what as far as block size goes?

You can also use a tri recs star to make sashing stars. This adds a lot of interest to any quilting block design. The cornerstone is the center of the star and the tri recs block is the end of the sashing strips that adjoin the cornerstone. This is especially effective if the blocks are set on point.
Here's one with plain blocks, a tri recs sash and a square-in-square cornerstone. Simple way to highlight gorgeous fabric!

Tennessee Waltz is a lovely quilt. Just finished one using the tri recs rulers and it was really easy. I found a free pattern somewhere...try google. I think I like these rulers!

Dorene Speckman (RIP) used to call the shapes created with the tri-recs tools "peaky" and "spike". I can't remember which she called which. Anyway, she wrote a book called Pattern Play, which was loaded with ideas and quilts using the blocks. The book is CHEAP on the Amazon.com used market. Pick up a copy if you don't have one.

Nancy Martin's "The Joy of Quilting" has several quilts made with the blocks. Also cheap on the Amazon used market.

Some of Bonnie Hunters quilts use the Tri-recs...look in the free patterns on the left side of her site and/or the recent mystery she did last fall: Celtic Solstice.
