Quilt Challenge!
#321
One of my favorite stories about the ladies that quilted long ago is that No man's hat was safe in the house of a quilter. The ladies would snip a small piece of the satin band inside the hat of a visitor to use in a crazy quilt. I have no idea if it's true, but it makes me giggle.

Hi Wendy: I am new to this form and am lucky to have a stash of all kinds of scraps, I am also concerned about the lack of stores that provide fabrics and quilting supplies. In our area, there is no store that is easily accessible for older ladies to get to to purchase what they need. Most of the older ladies do not drive good enough to go to a larger city to make their purchases. I think that will eventually cause a decline in quilting activities in the rural areas. I think your idea of doing this is great, and will participate in it. Thanks Happyfarmwife

My grandmother, a habitual quilter and gatherer, was famous for her "it's just a clip" response. I remember my mother put an Easter dress on me for church, only to find the the seams had been trimmed almost to the point of unravelling! (mother always had to alter my clothes to fit, so there were larger seams). After that, she started using French seams!

Hello,
I just wanted to say I'm in on this challenge for 2010. I had already determined to use fabrics from my stash as much as possible and spend less this year. I know I will buy backings and will need to buy batting before the year is out and that is o.k. but I really need to make a dent in what I have.
I love the idea of these crumble, crazy quilts and strings quilts. Would someone post a great link or tutorial for these please.
I started cutting fabrics into strips and squares and such this last year trying to get my scraps organized and was doing pretty well at it. Then my son and his wife moved in last fall and they are living downstairs which previously was my sewing area so I've not done much of anything since.
Being they are still here I won't get alot done for awhile but will work with what I have as I can.
Thanks for this thread I think it is great.

Muriel- Check out http://www.quiltville.com. Bonnie Hunter has lots of free patterns there. All of them are "scrappy" styles and quite a few are string or crumb style.

For those on here that are serious about using up what they have I just came across the stashbusters list and tho I've only joined 3 days ago I can tell you these ladies are very serious about this and have some great ideas even for the smallest of those string scraps for those who can't stand to throw any fabric pieces away. So if you need a little more help, motivations you might check it out.
