I have been looking at the pictures of quilts. I do not want to offend. In the pictures I see so much quilting the piecing is lost. Perhaps the quilts with a lot of quilting are considered art pieces,but when I think of a quilt I think of something soft and cozy. Something I can wrap up in on a cold night. Your thoughts? judy j

Judy, I too fall on the side of no heavy quilting.
Like anything else, it's a matter of choice.

I think of quilting as a technique rather than a particular 'thing.' Quilts are just generally stitched with a top, middle, and bottom. Some are soft and cuddly and others are not: some bedspreads, placemats, mug mats, purses, pieces of art are not at all cuddly. I would agree that the heavily quilted technique is a particular skill set that is very much admired at the moment.

We all have our own view of what if beautiful and what isn't -- that is a good thing. I love to see all the different ways people quilt their quilts!

my preference is medium density quilting... if there is too little quilting, the fabrics 'flop' apart too much for my taste. while i truly admire the skill of the quilters who can make their dense quilting a form of art, i also feel that the piecing is often lost. again, everyone has different tastes... so i admire them ALL

I agree that today's quilts seem to be more about the quilting than the piecing. Sometimes you don't even notice the piecing pattern because the quilting overwhelms it. a lot of it is done computerized. So how is that any better than bought.
Don't get me wrong. I'm in total awe of the gorgeous quilting some longarmers are capable of free hand. I know I could never do it.
But I tend towards the simple quilt it together as a functional part. Maybe that's cuz I can't do it and paid once to have one done. And am too cheap to ever pay again.

I can appreciate all the heavy quilting as it is beautiful, but I can't do that as I don't have the skills and instead quilt lightly on the machine or by hand -- with my quilts, you see the piecing and applique and sometimes a quilted design

My new style is minimal piecing and heavier quilting. I don't consider them art quilts. That's the beauty of quilts. All are beautiful and I love and appreciate all types.

I understand what you are saying as well. Some of the quilting is gorgeous but sometimes I see quilts that I wish were not quilted so heavily. That being said, since I have recently started to FMQ on my home machine I find that I give as much thought and maybe even more thought to how I should quilt compared to the piecing. I think its a skill building thing... I want to see what I can or can not do. I would imagine that if I had a long arm I would think even more about the quilting... to use my equipment. I think as long as the end result makes the person happy that is all that matters. There are plenty of clothes that women wear I would not wear myself, so same goes with this
