The best black I have ever come across is the Micheal Miller jet black. It's rich and beautiful! Kaufman's Kona is a close second.

www.fabric4less.com only sells by the bolt. Shipping is quite a bit, but including that I paid around $7 a yard for 108 wide fabric. I wanted that width so I could just rip it down the center and have enough for two comfort quilts from a one length piece.

I found Kona quilting black by the bolt at Hancocks Fabrics store; local in Texas. They do send you coupons with 40% off.

I buy Hoffman 1895-4 Black batik by the bolt - get it for around 7 bucks a yard. It is one batik I think they will not discontinue..... at least I hope not!

I actually prefer using a tone on tone black when I am piecing. I think it adds more interest and also removes that need for matching exact blacks. You can even easily go scrappy with different patterns and still have the effect you want of the black in your block.

I too agree with Ditters comment. Black, Red , Yellow and white never seem to be the same dyelot if you have to replace or add to a color. Sooooooo, plan it that way and have fun
