I've made HST's using a rectangle instead of a square. It actually uses a little bit less fabric because there are no dog ears on the two ends. I have notes on it but don't know where to find it here now. Maybe someone else will remember that. You add fabric to only one side only. If you want 2 inch finished HST's, your starting rectangle will be 2 1/2 inches by about 3", but I'm not sure about the 3".

Bonnie uses the Easy Angle ruler. It uses strips the same size as the unfinished HST. For example, use 2.5" strips for a finished 2" HST. Look here for a short video on how to do it: http://www.quiltville.blogspot.com/p/videos.html

You are supposed to add 7/8" but I always add 1" so I can square them up afterwards. Better still, invest in the triangulations CD. You can print out any size HST (I just use regular paper) and sew on the lines and have perfect HST every time. Good luck!

There just is many ways to get a HST and one has to experiment and find the one that best suits him/ her
