I use to print fabric for piecing and what works for me is:
a) let the ink dry and then set it by ironing before washing ,
b) to adhere fabric to freezer paper the iron has to be very very hot - cotton setting, press front and back on a hard surface,
c) cut the fabric 1/8" smaller than the freezer paper at the edge the printer pulls the paper
d) make sure there is not any piece of thread hanging from the fabric
e) set the printer to "photo paper" - thicker than regular paper since I´m feeding it with thick material.

Forgot to mention that washing the fabric to wash chemicals away is the first step I take.

You probably know this already....but don't starch the fabric either.

I have always wanted to print some letters on fabric but I have been too worried to even try it. I have an older H/P printer which at this time in my life, I don't want to have to replace it.

I have used a few different ones of ready to print sheets, my favorite is the June Tailor, for ease of use and clarity of pictures. It comes in sew in, iron on, and I think a couple of other options. Yes it is a bit expensive but never a problem with it. I have gotten it at Hobby lobby with 40% off coupon. I had tried some from Walmart one time to see how it was.. I actually ended up throwing it all in the trash, simply because it ran and never could get pictures to stay.
Maybe it is the brand that you used and not so much how it was done..... Don't give up, they are neat to do and fun when they work.

You need to use Bubble Jet. It preps the fabric to accept and hold the ink.

I was told by the local Staple print manager that newer desk printers use a different ink then the older ink jet printers. Change the setting on your printer to photo printing to get the best results.
