I'm chuckling at all the (probably correct) answers concerning even thread feeding and preservation of the machine's finish. I always figured the felts were there to minimize the sound of the bouncing spool! The joke's on me.

Love the idea of the crocheted spool doilies! My old Singer Diana came with the felt pad, but my new Janome Horizon didn't.

Actually, if you know how to crochet you can make a doily for your SM spindle in 30 min. or less and they're so darned cute.

My Janome came with one to use when I use the extra stand up spindle...not necessary when the spool is feeding horizontally.

I'm glad I saw the reference to the crochet spindle doily - that was the first thing I thought of when I saw this post!

Hi there.
I have a Designer 1 USB which came with two felt discs - a small one, I assume for small cotton reels, and a larger one for large cotton reels.
My recollection is they were sitting on the machine, on the corresponding spools, when I opened the box eight years ago.
This morning, when I checked the User's Guide, I could find no specific mention of them, or what their purpose might be. I am assuming it is to keep the cotton reel steady as it feeds the thread through the sewing machine, and probably helps with stitch quality.
