Ahhh, love that machine; reminds me of being a kid when I would make doll clothes on my Mom's treadle machine. Made beautiful stitches

So I have a question. I try to remember to use leaders, as the beginning stitches on my machine always tend to knot up on the back of the seam. But what is the reason for enders? To me it seems just another thing that needs to be cut. What am I not getting about this process?

And yes, your sewing machine is gorgeous. Still kicking myself for selling one from my mother-in-law about 30 years ago.

Beautiful machine-I have one just like it. I have it displayed in my foyer because the cabinet is so perfect (almost). Sometimes I wish I had it in my sewing room so I could use it more easily. I really like to sew on it and it makes for such unique conversation starters when someone comes in the house.

Love the little doily on the thread spindle...just the thing to set her off, like a feather in her hat!

When you are chain sewing, you slip a "leader" patch through the machine. When you get to the end of the chain of piecing, you sew an "ender" patch, snip off your chain of piecing at the back, and then your ender becomes a leader. Make sense?

Thanks for asking the question because I've never heard of that either. I know leaders and enders are used to begin stitching to prevent the material from being eaten by the feed dogs, but do you just sew them on top of each other as it appears in the picture ?
