I made mine using the top of a tray table, two layers of cotton batting, and a piece of muslin. I then made it a cover with another piece of fashion fabric that I can take off to wash. I suppose you could do the same thing with insulbright and fabric, but I could not figure out how to make it flat if I quilted the layers together, so my tray idea was born.

I made a portable ironing pad/hot iron carrier. It's about the size of a TV tray table, but it has handles and folds up so that you can carry a hot iron inside. It's a layer of the silver fabric, a layer of cotton batting, fabric for the back, and a binding and handles. I believe the pattern had 2 sizes for small and large irons.

I bought mine at Wal Mart, one side is a cutting mat and turn it over and an ironing pad.
Very handy and not to big for limited space.

I picked up a travel ironing pad at Ollies for $5.00. It shows it covering the top of a dryer in the picture. I haven't used it yet but I plan on making a board to cover the top of a small drawer unit that sits beside my sewing table and covering it with the ironing pad.

I made my own portable ironing board with 2 layers of an extremely heavyweight cardboard on a box my DH was going to throw out. I added a layer of cotton batting and a layer of Insul-Brite, but I've also made a smaller one where I just used a muslin cover that I can toss in the wash.
