I think it was here on the board I read that the mat needs to be washed in the sink with soapy water and air -dried. This mends itself, or something. I did do it and there was a significant improvement -- only after the second time about a week later.

Self healing mats need to have moisture in it to seal the cuts. When it dries out the cuts and cracks get worse and worse. I soak mine once a year over night and let air dry. The big ones fit in the bathtub or a child's wading pool.

I have used one like this, mine doesn't need to be cleaned very often.

I use a nylon scrubber, rubbing hard all over the surface then use a chalkboard eraser over it to pick up all the link the nylon scrubber got up. I also soak my matts in the tub with lukewarm water over nite and lay flat to dry after drying it with a towel. I am still using the same 2 matts I bought when I started out a year+ ago. But I do dream of a bigger matt all the time...yes I am a skinflint with my money...rather buy fabric

I read that an inexpensive gum eraser works well for cleaning off lint. I was thinking silly putty would work well too.

I use a piece of warm & natural to remove threads and some little pieces of anything on my mat. Works for me. I have never had anything sticky on my mat so some of the other suggestions would work for that.
